Isle of Wight Observer June 6 1861
To the Editor of the Isle of Wight Observer Sir – In passing a draper’s shop in High-street, (opposite John-street) I found several packing boxes, &c, placed partly on the pavement and partly on the road. A friend of mine had his foot injured and was nearly thrown on his face, in trying to make room for other passers-by. It is a great pity that our inspector of nuisances does not interfere, or some other person, to put a stop to such frequent obstructions (especially on such narrow pavements) which has been the subject of complaint times out of number.
I hope, Sir, you will be kind wnough to notice this, as it is for the good of the community, and the prevention of accidents; for, as the old adage says, “It is too late to lock the stable when the horse is gone”.
