On Wednesday evening Col Cradock celebrated the completion of the new wing to his residence, The Castle, by entertaining those engaged in the work at Mr Marlow’s Restaurant. About 30 men sat down to a capital supper. Colonel Cradock presided, and was supported by Mr John I Barton, the architect, and Mr J W Whitewood, the builder. After the loyal toasts, which were received with hearty enthusiasm, Mr J I Barton proposed the “health of Colonel Cradock”, whom they were so proud to see a resident of their town, and taking such a deep interest in everything calculated to promote its prosperity and welfare (loud cheers). With the toast he also associated the name of Mrs Cradock, a lady whose face was familiar to them all, and whose kindly interest in those around her was well known (loud cheers). The gallant Colonel (who had to wait some minutes before the enthusiasm subsided), having duly acknowledged the toast, proposed the “health of Mr John I Barton”, and expressed himself very well satisfied with the new wing which had been added to his residence. Mr Barton responded, and expressed his gratification that Colonel Cradock was satisfied with the work which they had all assisted in carrying out (applause). Col Cradock then proposed the “health of Mr W Whitewood, ” the builder, who also responded. We understand that the new wing which has been added to the Castle, includes a handsome dining room, 30ft by 20ft, large bed and dressing rooms, and a fine new staircase.
