St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church
A ROMAN CATHOLIC CHAPEL is about to be built in Ryde and workmen are being employed this week in clearing the ground. The Right Hon Lady Clare, residing at Brigstocke Terrace, Ryde, is stated to be a liberal subscriber towards its erection.
THE QUARANTINE ESTABLISHMENT – William Malone Jephson, esq., is appointed Assistant Superintendent of Quarantine at the Motherbank; and John Davies, esq, RN Master of the “Menelaus” Lazarette at that Station. The Tyrian, 10 ton brig, is fitted out at Plymouth for a second vessel at the Motherbank, in the room of the Roebuck.

The Roman Catholic Chapel, in High-street, is fast progressing. In the mean time, service is to be performed at “Gouldsworth Grove”, in this town, furnished by the Right Hon Lady Clare for the occasion.
The first stone of a new lodge of Freemasons, was laid on Tuesday last by the Brethren, without any ceremony; after which they all partook of a dinner at the Pier Hotel, provided by Brother Rendall.
Odd Fellows – a public meeting of our townsmen, was held at the Crown Hotel, on Tuesday evening last, for the purpose of forming a Lodge of the above Order. We understand that many respectable inhabitants enrolled their names on the list.
Two meetings of the Friends and Supporters of the “British Society for ‘Promoting the Religious Principles of the Reformation’ were held in the Town Hall, on Tuesday last. The number on both occasions was very great, that in the evening amounting to near seven hundred. The Chair in the morning was taken by the Rev W S Phillips, Vicar of Newchurch; and in the evening by the Rev A Hewitt, Minister and Proprietor of St James’ Chapel, Ryde. The Rev George Cumming and the Rev R Blakeney, attended as a deputation from the Society, and furnished much useful and interesting information on the Romish Controversy, illustrated with a variety of anecdotes, equally amusing and instructive. The collections amounted to 20l.

RYDE – HER MAJESTY’S CORONATION – This day is to be observed here on Tuesday next as a general holiday, by the general consent of the inhabitants. We trust that there will be a general reduction of fares by the Portsmouth and Ryde Steam Packet and the South Western Railway companies on that day.
A club has just been formed at Ryde called the “Royal Victoria Yacht Club”. A piece of ground has been selected in Pelham Field , near the residence of W B Astley, esq, for the Club house, which is progressing very favourably.
The Roman Catholic Chapel, now building in High-street, where Alpha House formerly stood, bids fair to be a very elegant structure. Its estimated cost, we understand, (including the school-house), is 13,000l. It will most likely be opened in December next.
