There were two Town Sergeants in Ryde, and one uniform survives intact. These images are reproduced by kind permission of the Isle of Wight Heritage Service.
This uniform has breeches, although a photograph exists, which shows the two men wearing full length trousers. One of these men may be Henry Buckett, town crier, fire brigade chief, town clerk, bill sticker, collector of market tolls and, as seen in the photograph, mace bearer.

The buttons on the Town Sergeant’s uniforms bear the sea serpent which appears on Ryde Borough Crest.

This serpent also appears at the base of the two lampposts in Lind Street, outside the Town Hall.
