With immense gratitude from everyone at the Historic Ryde Society
There are some people whose contribution cannot be measured simply in years of service, meetings attended or projects completed. Their legacy is woven into the very fabric of an organisation, becoming part of its identity and ensuring that it continues to flourish for generations to come. Such people are Brian and Sandy Harris, together with Alan Brading.
As Brian, Sandy and Allan step down from the Committee of the Historic Ryde Society, we do so with mixed emotions. While we fully respect their decision and wish them every happiness for the future, we cannot let this moment pass without expressing our deepest appreciation for everything they have given to the Society and to the Museum of Ryde.
Brian has been a member of the Historic Ryde Society since 2011, serving with distinction as a Committee member and, more recently, as Chairman. Throughout those years, he has provided outstanding leadership, calm judgement and an unwavering commitment to preserving Ryde’s remarkable heritage. During some of the Society’s most challenging periods, Brian’s determination, vision and tireless work helped ensure that the Museum not only survived but continued to develop and grow.
Behind every successful organisation stand individuals who quietly devote countless hours that often go unseen. Brian was one of those individuals. Whether preparing funding applications, producing the extensive documentation required to secure vital financial support, representing the Society, solving practical problems or helping guide strategic decisions, he approached every task with professionalism, integrity and remarkable dedication.
Alongside Brian, Sandy Harris has been an equally valued and indispensable part of the Society’s journey. Her kindness, encouragement, practical support and willingness to help wherever needed have touched everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her. Together, Brian and Sandy have formed an exceptional team whose generosity of time and spirit has benefited not only the Committee but every volunteer and visitor who has walked through the Museum’s doors.
No tribute would be complete without recognising Alan Brading, whose extraordinary knowledge of Ryde’s history has become legendary within the Society. Allan has long been regarded as one of the Museum’s greatest assets—a true historian whose depth of research, remarkable memory and passion for local heritage have enriched countless talks and conversations. His willingness to share that knowledge has inspired both fellow volunteers and visitors alike, helping transform historical facts into engaging stories that bring Ryde’s past vividly to life.
Together, Brian, Sandy and Allan have helped shape virtually every stage of the Museum’s development over the past fifteen years. Their fingerprints can be found throughout the Museum—not only in its displays and exhibitions, but in the successful funding bids, careful planning, countless volunteer hours and unwavering commitment that kept the Museum’s doors open through difficult times. Their efforts have enabled the Historic Ryde Society to continue fulfilling its mission of preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of our town.
On behalf of every member, volunteer, supporter and visitor, we offer our most sincere and heartfelt thanks. Words alone cannot adequately express our gratitude for the extraordinary contribution each of you has made. The Museum of Ryde stands stronger today because of your dedication, and future generations will continue to benefit from the foundations you have helped build.
Although you may now be stepping away from Committee responsibilities, you will always remain cherished members of the Historic Ryde Society family. We sincerely hope this is not goodbye, but simply the beginning of a new chapter in which we shall continue to welcome you through the Museum’s doors, enjoy your company, seek your advice and celebrate your friendship for many years to come.
We wish Brian, Sandy and Alan good health, happiness, peace and every success in whatever lies ahead. Thank you for your extraordinary service, your friendship and your unwavering belief in the Historic Ryde Society and the Museum of Ryde.
