Our Story: Preserving Ryde’s Remarkable Heritage

The Historic Ryde Society was born from a deep love for the town’s unique past. In October 2009, as the 175th anniversary of Ryde’s Royal Victoria Arcade approached in July 2011, members saw an opportunity to celebrate, explore, and safeguard Ryde’s rich history.

A Vision for a Ryde Museum

From this initial spark grew a vision to establish a dedicated museum that would safeguard and share Ryde’s stories for generations to come. The historic basement of the Royal Victoria Arcade, full of its own character, was chosen as the perfect future home for this project.

To help bring this vision to life and celebrate Ryde’s vibrant spirit, twelve local artists were commissioned. Each created a unique image capturing the essence of a different month in Ryde, reflecting the town’s seasonal beauty and enduring spirit.

Art in the Heart of Ryde

These artworks, installed within the arcade’s rotunda in January 2011, now form a lasting tribute to the town. They offer a visual journey through Ryde’s year, enriching the historic space and inviting visitors to connect with its charm.

Our Growing Community and Charitable Mission

The society’s dedication to Ryde’s heritage was formally recognised when it became a registered charity (number 1173957) in September 2013. Since then, the community has continued to grow, welcoming new members who share a passion for preserving and exploring Ryde’s past.

Throughout the year, the society hosts a calendar of events such as talks, historical walks, and special exhibitions. These activities help bring Ryde’s stories to life and encourage a deeper connection with the town’s remarkable legacy.
